SPHS Golf Team Goes to 5 and 1
With an easy win over Monroe Township at Foresgate Country Club on March 31, the Tigers took another step
toward winning their division. Led by Vinnie Padula's 41 at the Palmer Course, the Tigers won 173-198. Monroe is one of the stronger teams in the division so this was an important
match. The team traveled to Shackamaxon Country Club on April 1, one of the finer courses in New Jersey. Here they ran into a strong Scotch Plains team and aerated greens. The
aeration is needed for healthy greens but very hard to play on. The Tigers lost 190-174.
On April 3, New Brunswick was their foe and Coach Kavka gave some of his younger players the chance to play
in a match. Steve Wieczork and Zack Olim carded 41's on the home course as the Tigers won 175-225.
The Tigers welcomed a strong Middlesex team on April 4 to West Nine and came away with a 160-165 win. Brad Martin's
impressive 37 proved to be the difference. The slick greens proved to be very difficult for both teams but the Tigers were up to the challenge.
The team played five away courses the week of April 7-11 and the results will appear next week. The matches were
played at Warrenbrook, Colonia Country Club, Quailbrook, Tara Greens and the Bunker Hill Golf Course.
